Charcot-marie-tooth disease is a group of progressive disorders that affect the peripheral nerves and result in problems with movement and sensation. Peripheral nerves connect the brain and spinal cord to muscles and to sensory cells that detect sensations such as touch, pain, heat, and sound.
Muscle weakness, decreased muscle size, decreased sensation, hammer toes and high arches are symptoms.
Cmt2 results from a defect in your peripheral nerve cells' axon. This is caused by a defect in your mitofusin 2 gene. Cmt3, also called dejerine-sottas disease, is caused by a mutation in your p0 or pmp-22 gene. This type of cmt is rare.
